Additional Treatment Options

Some folks need some extra help before they can start orthodontic treatment. You might need treatment in preparation for surgery. Or Dr. Desman might need to address problems with the bones and muscles that support your teeth. Here are a few other options we offer.

Palatal Expanders

Dr. Desman might also use palatal expanders to widen your upper jaw and move your teeth back to where they should be to help the jaw fit together properly during surgery.

Palatal expanders gradually widen your upper jaw through tension and time. Dr. Desman adjusts the tension in your expander with a screw mechanism that creates space in your mouth.

As your jaw gets wider, new bones form in the gap. Think of it like a new foundation for your new bite.

TADs

Some patients struggle with craniofacial issues (like cleft palate). They need special devices called temporary anchorage devices (TADs) to create more space in their mouth.

Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs) are tiny — but mighty — titanium screws. The TAD works like an anchor to which Dr. Desman connects the wires of your braces. Having an anchor gives the wires something to pull against so that your teeth realign where the doctor wants them.
